Three reviews, pulling in opposite directions — that is the honest starting point for JA Mechanical. The Wakefield company says it has been doing heating and air conditioning since 1990, family-owned, with NATE-certified technicians covering Essex, Middlesex and Suffolk counties: central air, heating systems, heat pumps and ductless units for homes and businesses. Its Massachusetts HVAC licence, 17762-SM-A, is active at the state registry, listed under holder of record Thomas Ray Hines. The fullest account of the work came in an August 2025 review. A customer with an aging compressor described a same-day call-out where the technician worked through the diagnosis, found no evidence of leaks, and suggested topping off the refrigerant rather than selling a replacement — fair pricing, and the fix had held when they wrote. The newest review, from December 2025, runs the other way. That customer had two systems installed, says one has never worked properly since, and says repeated calls went unreturned. Google's overall figure is 3.7 stars across three ratings. The permit trail is quieter than the website suggests: BuildZoom records 14 permitted jobs between 2011 and 2023 — Carrier central air installations in Milton and Topsfield, ductwork for two systems in Cambridge, new HVAC in Revere — with only two in the past three years. BuildZoom also prints a "no active license on file" alert, which traces to a Newton municipal HVAC licence, #426, that expired in March 2018; that is a city registration, separate from the state licence the registry shows active. For a repair or a diagnostic call, the 2025 account is encouraging. For a multi-system installation, ask directly what the warranty covers and how service calls are handled once the crew has gone — that is exactly where the one complaint landed.
