The Shade Store's Cambridge showroom, tucked in Harvard Square, is one of 150+ locations for a company that says it has handcrafted custom shades, blinds, and drapery in the USA since 1946, now run by a third generation of the same family. Locally it works less like a hardware-store blind rack and more like a design appointment: people come in for a made-to-order window treatment and leave with a measuring and installation date on the calendar. Google puts the Cambridge location at 4.9 stars across 38 ratings, and one name keeps recurring across review after review this year: Darine, the design consultant customers credit for walking them through fabric and shade choices. She's been thanked recently for spec'ing out options for a home office, for a full living-room-and-office selection alongside colleague Kristine handling the measuring, and for matching a fabric and steaming the finished drapes into place after install. A customer who'd put off window treatments for thirteen years singled out the Harvard Square showroom itself as part of the draw, and another who'd spent two decades cutting his own Home Depot blinds said the installation crew he got instead left him glad he'd switched. The one caveat that comes up even from happy customers is price. Outlets covering the brand call it a poor fit for budget-conscious shoppers and note it isn't the most price-conscious option out there, and one Cambridge reviewer summed it up as pricey but worth every penny. Third-party roundups also don't fully agree with each other on the numbers: one cites a BBB A+ rating alongside a 4.4-star Yelp average, notably below the 4.9 Google is currently showing for the Cambridge showroom. That mix — a single well-regarded local showroom staffed by consultants customers ask for by name, backed by a brand that makes its own product domestically rather than just reselling it — makes this a fit for someone who wants a guided, done-for-you custom order rather than an off-the-shelf blind. Given how consistently price comes up, it's worth asking for a firm, itemized quote before committing.

I had a great experience with The Shade Store. From the person who came to measure, through hanging the shades in my home. I did not realize shade store is the only company that makes the shades in-house (made in USA) and the local company does it all. Kristine L. walked me through the process, was responsive, and so helpful. I got exactly what I wanted (after a bad experience with two other companies). I just got my shades this week and am very happy - I love them. Thank-you!

I worked with Darine to get new shades for my home office. I had lots of questions and had her spec out many options. She was great and I love the shades!

Working with The Shade Store was a smooth and professional experience from start to finish. Darine at the Cambridge store was incredibly helpful throughout the process, and is an expert in all the available window treatment options. Darine guided us toward specific solutions like side channels for minimizing light in the bedroom that we hadn't even considered previously. Our installer, Frank, was also very skilled and efficient, and walked us through the setup of motorized shades on multiple levels of the house. When the initial measurements didn't quite work out for a single basement window in our 1800s built house, the Shade Store team handled the remake and re-installation efficiently and at no additional cost. The final results look great, and I would certainly recommend their services.

Highest quality product, great design service, support and installation. The shades are pricey but worth every penny.

Loved working with Darine. She automatically knew my style and helped me to choose the perfect fabric. The installers were efficient and professional. The installation was seamless. They took the time to carefully steam my drapes so they looked wonderful when completed.
