Sea-Dar Construction runs its Cape Cod operation from Sandwich and its main office from Boston, and it takes on the work most builders subcontract out of: architecturally complex custom homes, large renovations, and ground-up institutional and commercial buildings. A 2018 profile traced the company to Jean Abouhamad, a structural engineer and real estate developer who founded it in 1991 and was its president when that profile was written. Alongside building, the firm runs a Property Services division that maintains upscale homes for owners between projects. What the work looks like on the ground comes through best in a 2022 Cape Cod magazine feature about a coastal house. The homeowner said she was happy with the entire team, Sea-Dar included, whose drivers sometimes had to back large delivery trucks nearly a mile and a half down the road because a low overpass near the site would not clear them. The commercial side has drawn repeat business. In a 2019 trade write-up, the owner of West Cambridge Science Park described teaming with Sea-Dar on a 14,000-square-foot ground-up lab building in the Fresh Pond area of Cambridge. Earlier, in 2013, the company's Cape project manager was among the builders organizing a one-week house build in Orleans, and a 2012 New England Home project credit lists Sea-Dar building alongside C.H. Newton Builders. Design-world recognition is consistent and recent. Boston Magazine named the firm Best Custom Home Builder in Boston in its 2024 Best of Boston Home selections, and the 2024 PRISM awards gave it silver for Best Single Family Home over 8,000 square feet. A 2017 Cape Cod feature covered its House of Shifting Sands, a dune house designed by Ruhl Walker Architects that culminates in an asymmetrically arcing copper roof plane, and in 2024 the architecture studio Hacin publicly thanked Sea-Dar as its partner on a house that made the cover of New England Home. One thing to raise directly: U.S. Department of Labor enforcement records report an OSHA inspection of Sea-Dar Construction at a Massachusetts single-family housing construction site that resulted in five citations. It is fair to ask how the firm runs site safety today and who supervises subcontractors day to day. Sea-Dar fits a homeowner planning a high-budget custom build, a whole-house renovation, or a technically difficult coastal or urban site who wants a construction manager rather than a small crew. Ask which of its offices would run the job, who the on-site superintendent would be, and to walk a finished project of comparable scale and budget.
