A hundred and two permits since 2019, at a typical value near $293,000 — that figure tells you what kind of shop PEGASUS Design-To-Build is. The Melrose firm's permitted work is gut renovations, dormers, primary-suite additions and large kitchens, spread across Melrose, Malden, Belmont, Burlington, Arlington, Somerville, Peabody, Danvers and Chestnut Hill. The company says Geoffrey Shafer founded it in Melrose in 2001 out of his basement after a career in IT, brought design in-house in 2003, and bought its Main Street building and showroom in 2018. Its Better Business Bureau page shows 24 years in business, four employees and an A+ grade, though the firm is not BBB accredited. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active. What customers describe, over and over, is a team you hand a whole project to. A 2023 Houzz reviewer ran through the roster — architect, kitchen designer, project manager, production manager — and another that year described 3-D walkthroughs used to refine plans before anything was built. In April 2026 a homeowner laid out a project that combined a gut remodel of one and a half baths, added headroom to a cramped staircase, and new and refinished hardwood floors. A 2024 customer had a first-floor addition built with a primary bedroom, a large closet, a three-piece bath and a pantry in a tight footprint. In October 2023, a kitchen went down to the studs with an exterior wall moved and the deck rebuilt. The ratings line up across platforms: 4.9 from 40 on Houzz, 4.8 from 94 on Angi, 4.5 from 15 on Google. Reviewers from the older part of the record valued the paperwork as much as the carpentry — a December 2019 customer described daily progress emails and a clear breakdown of allowances, estimates and change orders, and a January 2019 reviewer said contractors arrived on a schedule shared daily, with no surprises. Two accounts complicate that, and both are old enough to date. In September 2021 a customer who described a professional, attentive start and an initial estimate range they were comfortable with paid for the design process and left two stars. In a July 2020 Angi review, a customer said everything went well except the kitchen painting, which they thought a two-year-old could have bettered. Design-fee-then-price is the usual friction point in design-build work, so settle the design agreement, the estimate range, and what happens if construction pricing lands above it before you pay for drawings. Houzz also carries the credentials the firm advertises — 11 Houzz awards, Green Certified Professional and Certified Remodeler, a 2007 EM-NARI CotY gold award for a bath under $30,000, and a listed CSL #84574 — which are the platform's and company's listings rather than a state check. Houzz puts typical job cost at $50,000 to $500,000-plus. For a kitchen, a primary-suite addition or a whole-floor reconfiguration in the towns north and west of Boston, this is squarely their work; for a single small room, ask early whether it clears their project minimum.
I give PEGASUS my highest recommendation. Our project comprised several different elements that took our home to a whole new level of comfort and good looks, including gut remodel of 1.5 baths, adding head space to a cramped staircase, new hardwood flooring and refinishing existing floors, expanding a closet, improving structural supports in basement, vinyl siding, and adding a decorative roof line to front of house for visual interest. We've lived in our "new" house several months now and could not be happier with the results. Geoff (owner), Jenna (designer), Mike (PM), and the rest of the PEGASUS staff were fantastic to work with. We place a high value on working with professionals who are knowledgeable and organized because my husband and I know we don't have the bandwidth to deal with contractors and subs ourselves. If you are getting multiple quotes (which you should), PEGASUS will not be the cheapest, but the value is real. The finished product speaks for itself. When we started talking with Geoff about the project, he was very up front about what he thought it would cost and how long it would take to complete. The statement of work was thorough, and we had no unplanned costs during the project. We had to be out of the house for some of the work and are so thankful that everything was done on time, saving us from paying additional rent. Mike was instrumental in making the whole project, ensuring the work was done right and completed on time. He provided daily updates, and we had zero anxiety. Jenna helped us see the potential in our house and had lots of ideas on how to make our small space function better and look better. We started off considering an addition, which Jenna drew plans for, and then she worked with us to iterate until we reached a plan to renovate within our existing footprint. I wouldn't hesitate to work with PEGASUS again in the future.
They did excellent work for us in a redone basement and bathrooms ~4 years ago. Still holding up brilliantly!
Pegasus did a first floor addition to our home which included a primary bedroom, spacious closet, three piece bathroom, and pantry space. I cannot say enough positive things about working with this company! They made our vision come to life (thanks Jenna!) in a tight space. Start to finish everyone we interacted with was personable, highly skilled, and responsive. The project was completed on budget and quicker than the initial time projection. We lived in the home with two toddlers and a dog during the construction (while also working from home) and it was truly minimally disruptive to our daily routines. We received daily emails on the progress of the work which was so helpful (Mike is the best!). The space is gorgeous and makes me feel like I'm living in a fancy hotel. They are the best contractors I have ever worked with! I would highly recommend them!
Pegasus was awesome. Their communication was prompt and pleasant, we loved working with them. Our kitchen came together beautifully and they planned a beautiful space for us to live in!! Jenna is both an artist and a genius. We loved her design!
We absolutely loved every step of the home renovation process with Pegasus. We had our kitchen redone, and they had great ideas on layout and materials. They were extremely organized and communicative, and every member of their staff that we interacted with was professional and wonderful to work with. And we love our new kitchen. We would gladly seek them out for future work, and highly recommend them.
