AJ Exterior is a Boston roofing and siding contractor, self-described as locally owned and operated, that says it has served the greater Boston area — including East Boston — since 1991; Angi separately lists 41 years of experience for the business. Its core work is exterior trades: asphalt roofing and roof replacement, vinyl, LP, and Hardie Board siding, along with windows, gutters, skylights, and decks. It carries a BBB A+ rating and an Angi Approved badge, but neither of those reflects customer sentiment directly, and the underlying reviews are thinner and more mixed: 3.5 stars from two Google ratings and 3.3 from four on Angi. A recurring theme shows up across BBB, Angi, and Google alike — the installation itself tends to get finished, but follow-up requests, warranty fixes, and callbacks don't always get resolved as quickly as customers would like. Before signing anything, it's worth asking specifically how punch-list items and warranty claims get handled after the crew leaves, since that's the point where several independent accounts diverge from an otherwise straightforward install. It's also worth checking license status directly: a BuildZoom listing shows several of the company's licenses, including Home Improvement Contractor and Construction Supervisor, marked inactive as of its last check — something the company's own site doesn't address. For a standard roofing or siding job from a contractor with decades in the trade, AJ Exterior is a workable option — just get warranty and follow-up terms in writing, and confirm the license is current before booking.

I have been dealing with Paul and he is not reliable. I have been calling him since August because they left trash and broke our tenants door bell. We are going into a new year and still have not heard back. I do not recommend this company.

Everything went smooth. Work was efficient & fast. Great communication with workers. Highly satisfied. Neighbor ended up using them also after he saw the work completed. They also offer Financing. A great advantage to use.

I wish I could read other reviews on BBB and other reviews before I chose AJ exterior. Again, a very disappointed experience and almost a nightmare. We have project in East Boston and hired AJ exterior for rubber roof. I have paid them 10K for deposit in Mar, 2022. They did send people there in the following week. However, nightmare began. The first time they completed the job is on March 22nd. After the job was completed, we found bubbles were everywhere. The good thing was they told me that it's caused by the glue they used and they agreed to redo the job. The 2nd time and 3rd time happened in Apr but the results were similar. Simply speaking, we still have bubbles everywhere. The owner Ed said he would come to take a look on Apr 26th, but he never came. We still have the permit open and a 'new' roof with bubbles everywhere.

In general, the job was done reasonably well and very fast but there were several problems afterwards which are still present. One of the roofs was not flashed properly and it still leaks. Also, one of the skylights was not sealed properly - after they already finished etc, we looked around and you could see the sky between the sill and the skylight. My wife and I sealed that off ourselves.
