ZEN Associates has been building Japanese-influenced gardens out of Woburn since 1980, and the permits tell you what tier of work it takes on: a $249,891 pool, enclosure and retaining-wall job in Brookline in 2022, a $165,793 deck, outdoor sauna and custom spa there in 2023, a $440,000 pool-and-stonework phase in Chestnut Hill in 2015. BBB records 49 employees and an A+ grade, though the firm is not BBB accredited. Designers and builders who work alongside them are the loudest voices in the reviews. A pool company wrote in January 2019 that ZEN's vision made their jobs easy to build; an architecture firm in March 2014 described four projects together, from a South End urban garden to a North Shore pool house, and called them versatile beyond the Asian idiom. A June 2025 reviewer from another design practice praised the project management on several residential jobs. Homeowners writing about their own gardens in 2014 were just as warm and far more specific. One described a Kyoto-inspired city garden — masonry, soil renewal, new lighting and irrigation, finished on deadline in a space where every square inch mattered, with neighbors remarking on how polite the crew stayed through the stone cutting. Another, in September 2014, wrote about boulders set around a fire pit and a copper-and-granite water feature, and added the line worth carrying into a first meeting: "They are not cheap, but either is their work." The other side of the record is about money and timing, not craft, and it recurs. In April 2016 a client who never got past design services wrote that timelines were consistently missed and that the company billed twice the agreed amount for sketches. In December 2025 another described more than a year of waiting with no work started, fees piling on, and months plus a lawyer to recover part of a deposit. Two accounts nine years apart, both alleging the contract and the invoice — not the garden — were the problem. Platform scores land around four: 4.0 from 16 on Google, 4.0 from 8 on Houzz, 4.4 across 46 aggregated ratings on Porch. BuildZoom lists a Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, 152958, and says it confirmed it active in March 2026; that is the directory's record, not a registry check, and its other listed registrations in Maryland, Pennsylvania and DC are old or cancelled. The right firm if you want a designed, permitted, high-budget landscape and you're prepared for that price. Get the fee schedule, the design-phase deliverables and the payment and refund terms in writing before you sign, and set dates for each milestone.
Horrible. No work done despite promising things getting started quickly (over a year of waiting) and over charge for things that should be standard. Had to back out of our contract because prices were exorbitant and the fees kept piling on. We gave an initial payment for initial work/designs and then subsequently a deposit for materials and to start work. Because of their stagnation, we asked for a partial refund back two months later (prior to any work being done or items being ordered) because they made no movement on ordering anything or even putting in applications. It took us months and a lawyer to get any of our money back (and of course not all of it was returned). The owner (Peter) seemed like this wasn't his first rodeo to have this happen and clearly knows how to make his contracts difficult to break out of.
