Recover Green Roofs installs and maintains vegetated rooftops — gardens, farms, amenity decks — out of Somerville, and it has been at it since 2009, when co-founders Mark Winterer and Brendan Shea, who met at St. Lawrence University, teamed up to build their first green roof. Winterer now owns and runs the company, which the site says works across New England on residential, commercial, and municipal buildings. It holds an active Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor license, and its Accredited Green Roof Professional and certified-horticulturist credentials point to a team built around the plant-and-membrane specifics of this niche rather than general contracting. On Google it holds a 4.9-star average from 15 ratings, and the two reviews posted so far this year back that up with specifics rather than just stars. A client on the Monty Boston project called the team — Steph, Jonas, and the rest — collaborative and educational through both the install and the ongoing maintenance that followed, saying they were willing to explain how a green roof actually functions rather than walk away after installation day. Another reviewer who has used them for seven or eight years described them as reliable, detailed, and a strong communicator — the kind of line that comes from repeat business, not a one-off job. There is no negative review anywhere in its record, on Google, BBB, or elsewhere. Its BBB file carries an A+ grade, though the company has not pursued formal BBB accreditation, and it is also listed as a member of the Somerville Chamber of Commerce. What is thin here is volume: the detailed review record spans just six reviews across six sources, sparse for a company that has been doing this since 2009 — a clean pattern so far, but not yet a deep one to hire against. This is a fit for a green roof, rooftop farm, or rooftop garden project rather than a general remodel or repair call, and the multi-year repeat client is worth asking about directly if you want a longer reference than what is public.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Recover Green Roofs has been an exceptional partner from installation through ongoing maintenance of the green roof at The Monty Boston.

Working with Steph, Jonas, and the entire team has been educational, informative, responsive and wholly collaborative. What impressed me from the beginning was their willingness to share their expertise and help us understand not only how a green roof functions, but how to maximize its long-term health, beauty, and performance.

Recover Green Roofs installed the roof with the assistance of designer Brendan Shea, and the finished product has exceeded our expectations. Today, the roof serves as both a beautiful guest amenity and a functioning stormwater management system. The plantings are thriving, the irrigation system is performing well, and the roof continues to mature exactly as envisioned.

Their communication is excellent, their reporting is thorough and their team takes obvious pride in their work. As a developer, I appreciate working with professionals who combine technical expertise with practical problem-solving and a collaborative approach.

I would highly recommend Recover Green Roofs to any property owner, architect, developer, or building manager considering a green roof project. They have been a pleasure to work with from start to finish.

— Paul Grant
The Monty Boston

I can't say enough good things about Recover Green Roofs. We have been working with them for seven or eight years and they have always been fantastic. They are reliable, detailed, knowledgeable, timely, and great communicators. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job than they do - five stars aren't enough!

Recover's team worked with us throughout the design, installation, and first year of establishing the rooftop garden of our dreams. They made everything clear, easy, and beautiful. Photos attached of our garden 1 year after installation: pollinator "meadow", 1 perennial floral mound, 1 annual veggie/herb mound, and a LOT of creeping thyme!

I got a great introduction today to Recover Green Roofs at their site tour and presentation event. Thanks to Mark Winterer, Katina Bentley, and the Recover Green Roofs team for all of the time spent. I love hearing people so experienced and so committed show off their work!

So many of the same themes come up again and again in integrating high-performance building project: technical and material expertise, each situation is unique, coordination (or lack of) across trades, importance of iterative design build. Glad there are so many builders working to combine all of these elements to create successful projects and buildings.
