Highlights

  • Not a contractorself-reported as a Salem youth-services nonprofit, not construction
  • Wrong-business listingno source describes any waterproofing or contracting work
  • Care-quality complainta 2025 resident review alleges neglect and hunger at the facility

This listing sits in the waterproofing category, but nothing about it describes waterproofing, foundation work, or any contracting at all. Plummer Youth Promise, at 37 Winter Island Rd in Salem, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that runs residential foster-care programs, group homes, and permanency services for youth in or at risk of state care — founded in 1855 as a reform school, renamed in 2017, and led by executive director Nicole McLaughlin under a board of trustees. Its Google page shows 3.6 stars from 44 ratings, but the reviews that turn up have nothing to do with hiring anyone for home repairs. A November 2025 review from a resident describes being left hungry, degraded by staff, and unsupported heading toward homelessness at 19 — a serious complaint about the care program itself, not about any construction job. Older reviews run the other way: alumni from the 1950s and 1980s credit specific staff members with turning their lives around, and a Chamber of Commerce listing plus a $6 million MassDevelopment bond point to an organization with real standing in Salem's nonprofit community. None of that bears on whether anyone should hire this entry for waterproofing or general contracting — because it isn't one. Groom Construction, a real construction firm, shows up in several sources for building Plummer's new residential facility, but that's Groom's work, not Plummer's. This looks like a wrong-business match that got swept into the contractor directory by name rather than an actual contractor, and it should be treated as a data error rather than a live lead for waterproofing work.

my name is Steve Nolan it will be 70 years since I stepped foot on Plummer Farm School on April 2nd 1952 I was 11 years old .at 2:30 in the afternoon the reason I know it was 2:30 when I walked into the front door I was introduced to the superintendent George LaPorte and then brought up to the School classroom we're all the other people were the first thing that you would see a big clock on the wall that said 2:30 I was introduced to the schoolteacher mr. Stacy there was proximately 25 kids in the classroom. I live there for approximately three-and-a-half years. until it closed. they told me I would be there for a couple of weeks I Was there on the 100th anniversary in 1955. I often wondered if any of the kids ever check back out of curiosity. I know of one ( Howie Long) I knew him well he was there long before me thank you Steve Nolan Anniversary

I can't for the life of me understand the critical one-star comments in the reviews. This is a remarkable staff of dedicated, ethical, hardworking people. I have only seen the Plummer staff maintain the highest standards of professionalism and caring for youth in transition. Really, one-star??? I don't get that. So here are five stars because I can't give them 6 here.
