McCarthy & Son Landscaping has been working out of Ipswich since 1986 — a 17-person corporation run by Timothy K. McCarthy, doing landscaping, planting, lawn care, construction and snow plowing. Forty years is a long run. What the people who wrote about it say is harder. Google puts it at 3.0 across four ratings, and both customers who wrote anything gave one star. In May 2023 a homeowner described saving for two years to have a backyard scraped, loamed, reseeded, fertilized and hayed; the crew turned up six weeks late, on a day the homeowner had told them they would be travelling, and a year on the yard had rocks where loam should have been and most of it unseeded. That reviewer also said they filed a BBB claim and that he refused to respond to it. The other, from September 2021, is about a job that did not start. A customer accepted a quote in April for resanding a paver walkway and setting 180 edge blocks; by June nothing had happened, and the answer given was hiring problems and rain. Two accounts is thin and both are several years old, but both are specific and both are about the work itself. Set against that, its BBB page carries an A+ letter grade — a score BBB calculates without customer reviews, and the business is not accredited. If you call them, pin the start date and the finished condition down in writing, and ask for two recent references you can actually reach.

I'm 61 years old and I saved up for 2 years to pay for my ugly backyard to be made beautiful-scraped, loam put down, reseeded, fertilized and hay. I asked to be home when they did the work. What I got was 6 weeks late, done on a day without notice that I was traveling that day, came and went. Came back 2 months later to put down more hay after I texted and called 3x. Its now about a year later and I have a total mess in my yard-please see pictures. Rocks were put down instead of loam. No seed in most areas. Filed a BBB claim against him and he refused to respond. Please see my pictures and don't put yourself through this aggravation. My only recourse now is small claims. :(
Received an advertising flyer in my mailbox in April of 2021. called him about 2 projects. One was re sanding an extensive paver walkway and brick area. the 2nd involved placing 180 edge blocks around a patio area. Mr. McCarthy came to my home quoted me a price which I accepted and he verbally agreed to do the jobs. I didn't hear from him by June so I called him to inquire about the status of the job. He informed me he was having problems hiring help and that all the rain was wreaking havoc with his schedule. I said I understood and that the work wasn't a priority I just wanted it done before winter. he assured me it would be done and I took him at his word. It is now September, I have placed 4 phone calls to him requesting the the courtesy of a return call and a decision of whether he intended to perform the agreed upon work. To date I not received a call and must assume he is not going to do the job. I feel a professional in business should at least return calls and explain why he cannot/will not do a job he agreed to do. I am probably fortunate he didn't do the work as if his attitude towards his potential client is any indication it would have been subpar. I can't speak to the quality of his work as he never did any but his lack of professionalism and concern for a client he committed to is definitely in need of upgrading
