"Doug is an artist with stone." That line, from a September 2020 client, is the shortest fair description of Landesign. Douglas Cook founded the firm in Gloucester in 1987 and still runs it, designing outdoor spaces across the North Shore and Cape Ann — patios and terraces, pools and spas, fire pits, ponds, decks and gardens, with the region's own boulders and blue stone doing much of the work. The praise from that period is specific about design judgment rather than muscle. A March 2019 client described boulders and blue stone set among planting to screen a neighbour's house; an April 2019 homeowner came in with a lackluster patio and left knowing about materials they had never heard of; a May 2019 client credited him with a realistic budget on a patio and backyard rebuild and said the crew worked around their home life. One review runs entirely the other way, and it is the serious one. In August 2017 a client wrote that Cook disappeared two months earlier with the project roughly 80% complete, after being paid in full and on time, and stopped answering calls, texts and emails — and that subcontractors he claimed to have lined up had never been contacted. That is nine years old now, and nothing since contradicts or repeats it, but it is a specific account of a job left unfinished and it belongs in the calculation. The other thing to weigh is silence. The newest written account of working with Landesign dates to September 2020; the record runs 2017 to 2020 and stops. For a firm with 39 years behind it that is a thin picture of how it operates now. Jobs are quoted between $2,500 and $250,000, which spans a garden refresh to a full pool-and-terrace build. If you are considering the larger end, ask for two or three projects finished in the last two years, call those owners, and put a payment schedule tied to completed stages — not to the calendar — in the contract.
Doug is an artist with stone. He's done an incredible job with the landscaping for my house! I love his innate sense of design. He has a flair for placement of stone and bush, dirt, etc. My family is thrilled with all that he has done and he's added immeasurably to the value of my home.
Landesign was a pleasure to work with, Doug is a truly talented designer. In addition to his creativity, the entire team was respectful and flexible of our home life throughout the project. We love our transformed patio and backyard landscaping. They heard our ideas and guided us toward a workable vision. Doug has a firm understanding of the multifaceted costs of landscape and home renovation. The result was a workable and sustainable budget. Doug and the Landesign crew exceeded our expectations!
We found Doug's expertise and attention to the details comforting as when we sought his consultation about what to do with our lackluster patio and aspiring fire pit. We learned about options and materials we never knew were out there for tackling our plan and making our outdoor space more livable. We hope to use his team again in the future.
Working with Doug was a fantastic experience. He offers the perfect blend of creativity and realism. Our home has gotten rave reviews. He's a true expert on designing for New England landscapes.
We used boulders and blue stone, surrounded it with a variety of plant material to buffer neighbors home for a patio that is private, comfortable and beautiful. The knowledge and experience of Landesign helped us create a space that endures and grows with time.
