Almost every written review of Holden Oil since 2024 says a version of the same thing: it used to be fine, and then it was sold. The Peabody company delivers heating oil and propane and services the equipment that burns it, and its customers now describe it as part of Superior Plus Propane — a change several of them, some with twenty years of history there, name directly as the moment the service changed. On Google it carries 3.3 stars from 83 ratings, but the written half of that is far harsher, and it is not softening: all six reviews from the last six months are negative. One theme runs through them. Customers on automatic delivery keep running out of fuel. A renter says they have been left empty twice this winter and that the tank's electronic reader has been broken since February with nobody sent to fix it. Writing in January 2026, another waited nineteen days for propane ordered on December 14 and heated the house with space heaters until it came. Billing and reachability form the second thread. A March 2025 customer said a credit went unapplied for months while the company billed eight hours of labor for a tank relocation finished in five, and let emails sit for weeks. In March 2024 a homeowner described being charged twice for one oil delivery, with $1,053 still outstanding when they wrote. A November 2025 reviewer said calls no longer reach the Peabody office at all — theirs was answered by a representative in Maine. It is not uniform. A driver named Bill appears twice in the older reviews: once in November 2022, for an emergency propane delivery mid-way through a Thanksgiving dinner, and once in February 2022 from a customer who called themselves long-time and aggravated and said he salvaged it. On the trade side, BuildZoom lists the company under HVAC, sheet metal and mechanical work, with a permit history built on propane tanks and underground gas lines across Essex County, and records an HVAC/mechanical contractor registration it says expired in 2018. If you need a fuel supplier who answers on a cold Saturday, what its customers have written lately reads as a warning rather than a recommendation. If you are already on their tanks, the practical advice running through those reviews is to watch the gauge yourself instead of trusting the automatic schedule, and to get any credit, refund, or service appointment confirmed in writing — and to check the licence status directly with the state before booking equipment work.
“I went through my oil company (Holdens at the time). It was nowhere near 4K but I'm sure there has been inflation since then.”
Renting a house, Jumping through hoops to make a payment over the phone, Like im entering the Pentagon.. they have let me run empty 2 times this winter and im on automatic delivery. They say the electronic reader is broken(in February)but they have not been out to fix it in 4 months. Waiting for the tank to run empty and switching companies.. would absolutely not recommend this company.
Superior plus gas are the worst company ever leaving senior citizens with ESA support animals with no propane delivery meaning no heat or hot water to shower or cook to feed themselves and their pets for several days.
Horrible Been waiting for close to a month for a tuneup, but the test equipment is “out for calibration”. There is a drip from the relief valve which I figured would be addressed during this service call or at least looked at. They refuse to come out or give timelines one when they will be available. Just spoke to a “tech” who said he would take care of my case personally. Zero communication until I reach out only to find he is out on a service call now, but still without efficiency test equipment (over a month!!). Not that you care, but you’ve lost a customer today, and I will be recommending my neighbors to switch as well. Company is a complete fraud.
I rarely leave reviews, but my experience with Holden Oil & Propane has been so frustrating—and concerning—that I feel obligated to share it. I purchased my home in July and contacted Holden in September because the property has one of their propane tanks, which we use for cooking. I was told that because the home recently changed ownership, they needed to perform a service/safety check on the tank before moving forward. I was instructed to create an online account and then call back to schedule the inspection. I followed their instructions, created the account, and called back. I was told someone would contact me to schedule the service check. No one ever called. A month later I called again and was told the same thing—that someone would reach out to schedule the inspection. Again, no one called. I called again in late December and was told once more that someone would reach out, but the person I spoke with said they couldn’t help me any further. After months of trying to get a required safety/service check scheduled, I called again this week and asked to speak with someone who could actually resolve the issue. The employee who answered the phone was extremely rude and dismissive. I explained that I had already called multiple times over several months just to schedule a simple inspection. She placed me on hold and eventually came back saying someone could come out Thursday (3/12) between 12:00–4:00 PM and that I needed to be home. I rearranged my work schedule and took the entire day off to be home for this appointment. No one showed up. No one called. No explanation. After months of trying to schedule a safety inspection on a propane tank that belongs to their company, they finally schedule an appointment, require me to be home, and then simply fail to show up or communicate at all. This is not just poor customer service—it raises serious concerns about how this company manages propane equipment and safety responsibilities. At this point, I am actively exploring having their tank removed and replaced with a propane provider that is responsive, professional, and takes both customer service and safety seriously. Based on this experience, I would strongly advise anyone considering this company to think twice.
