Jen runs Gardener on the Hill out of Somerville, and the reviews return to one word again and again: native. This isn't a mow-and-blow outfit — it's ecological garden design, built around native plants, pollinator habitat, and a rewilding approach to yards across Cambridge, Boston, and Somerville. Jen holds a Certified Permaculture Landscape Designer credential and has completed Pollinator Stewardship Training through UMASS Amherst, and that training shows up directly in how clients describe the work. On Google, the business holds a perfect 5.0 average across 15 ratings. The two most recent reviews keep that streak going: in February, a client praised the "eye for detail and creative problem solving" behind a wild, native-plant garden designed for winter interest that evolves through the seasons; a few weeks earlier, another described a full yard transformation into "a beautiful garden from start to finish," built from design options and suggestions that exceeded their expectations. Earlier reviews stretching back to 2025 describe the same kind of hands-on, collaborative design process rather than a standard install-and-leave job, so the pattern isn't new. Worth knowing before calling: this is design-and-install work for people who want a native or naturalistic garden — not a crew for routine lawn mowing or turf care. The business describes itself that way, and every review lines up with that focus, so it's the wrong call if you're after weekly mowing rather than a redesigned landscape. Gardener on the Hill is a solid pick for a homeowner in the Cambridge/Somerville/Boston area who wants a yard rebuilt around native plants and pollinators rather than a conventional lawn service. Start with a consultation, ideally in spring or fall, and expect the conversation to center on your yard's microclimates and seasonal interest before any digging starts.

Jen is an incredibly thoughtful and intuitive designer who was such a pleasure to work with. Her eye for detail and creative problem solving made her stand out compared to other consultations I had. I wanted a very natural and wild feel to my garden with as many native plants as possible. It was also important that my garden provided winter interest and evolved with the seasons and Jen did just that! I’d highly recommend Gardener on the Hill to anyone who is looking to enhance their green space and wants to work with one on one with a bespoke gardening company that cares. Thanks so much!

We recently linked up with Jen and her team @ Gardener on the Hill. And our experience has been nothing but amazing. We have a small woodworking/carpentry division and have been lucky enough to be part of some very unique designs and projects that wouldn’t have been possible without their vision and design expertise. Excited to see what the future brings. Highly recommend!

Execution and taste level are top notch! Creative, hard working, clear consistent communication, ability to pivot and prioritize and a sense of urgency when you need it most. Please don't keep them too busy or else I won't be able to book when I need!

Jen truly is a garden whisperer! She transformed our small city dirt plots into gorgeous gardens that surprise us from early spring through late fall with thoughtfully arranged native plants and flowers. Passersby are always sharing accolades and taking pictures. When we travel, one of the things we look forward to most on returning is seeing how the garden has transformed while we've been away. Jen is a pleasure to work with. She spends time to teach us how to care for our gardens and is always available when we need help with larger spring and fall cleanups. We highly recommend her!
