Big Picture Framing's Porter Square shop, at 2044 Massachusetts Ave in Cambridge, does custom picture framing — not house framing or carpentry. The company, started in 2000 by Barry Stahl and Bob Clayton and now employee-owned, frames artwork, photos, diplomas, jerseys, mirrors, and the occasional custom object for a chain of Massachusetts stores that stretches from Arlington to Sudbury. Its Google page for this location shows 4.3 stars across 27 ratings, though the written history behind that number is thin — a handful of reviews spread across several sources rather than a steady stream. What's there leans positive over the years, with an occasional complaint about pricing and one mention of a slow callback when a job was finished. None of this touches carpentry, remodeling, trim, or structural framing — it's a retail frame shop that surfaces under a 'carpentry' search only because 'framing' means two different things in the two trades. Anyone hunting for a carpenter should keep looking; anyone hunting to frame art or memorabilia near Porter Square has a long-running, employee-owned local option, with pricing and pickup-notification worth confirming upfront.

I had Big Picture fabricate a frame for an old pinball machine backglass I had, so I could add backlighting and use it as wall art. This was a bit of an unusual request but I am very happy with the results.

Nothing but joy and satisfaction over the years. Even with special projects. Staff do change , I might have gotten lucky , but I can’t praise the place enough.
