What customers keep describing isn't a tree coming down — it's a tree staying up. Barrett Tree Service East runs out of Medford, and across 406 Google ratings averaging 4.9, the stories that repeat are rescues. That posture starts before anyone picks up a saw. Arborists get named in review after review — Hendrik, Ryan, Nate, Marc — and homeowners describe them walking the property and laying out options first. One customer wrote in July that they chose Barrett precisely because it was recommended as a company that cares for trees "instead of just taking them down." A June 2025 reviewer credited Ryan with rescuing an 80-year-old Japanese maple after a hard winter; another, in May 2025, described deadwood trimmed from a 150-year-old copper beech and the tree watched for beech leaf disease every fall and spring. A December 2025 customer with four badly stressed trees — two cherries, a pear and a redbud — said they were pleased with how it turned out, scars and all. When removal is the right answer, they take the awkward ones. In November 2025 a homeowner described three tall trees leaning over three separate houses coming down so cleanly it was as if they had never been there. Cleanup comes up constantly: this April, someone whose 70-year-old oak was cut back off a neighbor's roofline noted the crew tidied the yard, the roof and the alley. Its BBB page is an A+ and accredited, and a reviewer this spring singled out that the company is locally and employee-owned. The friction is at the front door, not on the job. Barrett charges for the visit that produces an estimate — $125, per a one-star review in April 2026 that objected the fee surfaced only after a lot of back-and-forth. A second one-star in March 2026, from someone who says they have lived across the street for fifteen years, points out that the company's own site states it does not charge for quotes, and that a booked appointment passed with no call. In May 2025 a caller reported three days of messages and no callback, and in April 2025 a two-star reviewer put it flatly: if you are price shopping, this is not the one. Satisfied customers say a gentler version of the same thing — one in November 2025 called the work not inexpensive and recommended them anyway. Two negatives against nineteen reviews in the last six months is a small share, and both are about the sales process rather than the work. If you want an arborist who will argue for keeping a tree and can handle a removal other outfits would rather not, this is a reasonable call. Ask what the consultation costs and whether it credits toward the job, and get your appointment confirmed before you plan around it.
I have had an excellent experience working with them. They seem to care more than others about their quality and pleasing the customer. I feel thjeir advice about pruning my trees is excellent. They are prompt and dependable.
As always, Barrett dud a great job. We've used them for pruning back trees away from the house and also for dead tree removal. Their office is responsive and the people that come to do the work are very knowledgeable and nice. Will continue to work with them as needed!
Excellent workmanship and professionalism
This company was recommended to me as one that truly cares for trees, instead of just taking them down, which is what I was looking for. I have a few trees I've been wanting to get checked out to make sure they're doing ok, and Barrett Tree Services really came through. They came out to look at the property, talked through all the options, and suggested both treatments for the trees and ways to give them longer to thrive by pruning them. They were prompt, kind, explained everything really well, and did a great job. I'm so glad I went with them.
Great service for diagnosing and recommendations for assisting ailing tree.
